TYPE TMBR – elastomeric strip for timber structures
TYPE TMBR is an unreinforced elastomeric strip for supporting timber structures (CLT floor panels, glulam panels and beams) on steel, reinforced concrete and timber beams. It ensures uniform load distribution and full contact at the support, compensates for irregularities of the bearing surface and deviations from the horizontal plane, and accommodates the differential movements of timber and steel without inducing additional stresses at the support. The strip separates the structural elements and reduces the transmission of structure-borne noise between floors. The strips are made of unreinforced elastomer with a hardness of 65 Shore A. Permissible loads by strip width, installation instructions and tolerances are given in the TYPE TMBR technical data sheet (PDF).
Where TYPE TMBR is used
- Supports of CLT and other timber floor panels on steel beams.
- Supports of timber structures on reinforced concrete and masonry elements.
- Timber-to-timber connections (CLT panels supported on timber beams, walls or other CLT elements).
- Hybrid (timber–steel, timber–concrete) connections.
Key properties of TYPE TMBR
- Maximum permissible characteristic load Fk,max from 100 kN/m’ (50 mm wide strip) to 520 kN/m’ (260 mm wide strip); intermediate values may be interpolated.
- Ensures uniform load distribution and full contact at the support.
- Compensates for irregularities of the bearing surface and deviations from the horizontal plane.
- Accommodates the differential movements of timber and steel without inducing additional stresses at the support.
- Separates the structural elements and reduces the transmission of structure-borne noise between floors.
- Made of unreinforced elastomer with a hardness of 65 Shore A.
- Compression perpendicular to the grain of the timber element at the support shall be verified by the designer to EN 1995-1-1.
Installation
- A clearance of not less than 15 mm (including chamfers) is normally recommended between the edge of the supporting element (steel beam flange, reinforced concrete or timber element) and the strip.
- The strips are laid continuously along the support with their ends butted tightly together and, if required, fixed with adhesive or double-sided tape.
- Before installation, make sure that the strip surface is free from dirt, grease, solvents, ice and oil.
Dimensions and tolerances
Standard strip thicknesses are 5 and 10 mm; other thicknesses are available on special order. Permissible loads by strip width (50–260 mm) are given in the TYPE TMBR technical data sheet (PDF). Tolerances: hardness ±5 Shore A, length ±5 mm, width ±3 mm, thickness ±0.5 mm.
Frequently asked questions
What load can a TYPE TMBR strip carry?
The maximum permissible characteristic load Fk,max ranges from 100 kN/m’ (50 mm wide strip) to 520 kN/m’ (260 mm wide strip); intermediate values may be interpolated. Compression perpendicular to the grain of the timber element at the support shall be verified by the designer to EN 1995-1-1.
Is TYPE TMBR suitable for CLT panels on steel beams?
Yes, this is the main application of the strip – supports of CLT and other timber floor panels on steel beams. The strip is also used for supporting timber structures on reinforced concrete and masonry elements and in timber-to-timber connections.
Does TYPE TMBR reduce noise between floors?
The strip separates the structural elements and reduces the transmission of structure-borne noise between floors, while its full contact at the support ensures uniform load transfer.
What clearance should be left from the edge of the support?
Unreinforced strips expand laterally under load, so a clearance of not less than 15 mm (including chamfers) is normally recommended between the edge of the supporting element and the strip.
What strip dimensions can be ordered?
Standard thicknesses are 5 and 10 mm; other thicknesses are available on special order. Permissible loads in the data sheet are given for strips 50–260 mm wide. Tolerances: hardness ±5 Shore A, length ±5 mm, width ±3 mm, thickness ±0.5 mm.
